Starting Sunday, January 26, 2003, we began our new worship service. In 2002 the worship committee talked about the need for two different worship services - an early traditional service that meets the needs of those who like what we already offer - and a later alternative service that reaches out to all generations and new people in this community.
In the passing months, a task force met with Shea Darian, who was then the Minister of Worship, to plan our new service. Starting January 26, 2003, the second service became more informal. It offers more variety and more participation from the congregation. Sometimes it is led with high energy by a worship band. Sometimes it offers silence with more time for reflection and meditation. This worship will continue to evolve as we discover that works well and not so well. We will be open to the needs of our members and the leading of God's Spirit.
We asked God to lead us as we selected a name for this new service. At different times we have called it various names including the alternative, contemporary, or the new service. Eventually we decided to call it our Jubilee service. The name captures the sense of joy and celebration we hope will be present as we worship.
The word Jubilee is special in the history of the Bible. It comes from the Hebrew word, jobel, which meant a ram's horn - the instrument used to proclaim a celebration. In the Latin language, the word is jubilo which means to shout. In both cases, the word projects a sense of festive worship. In the Old Testament Jubilee was a most rare and special festival occurring once every 50 years. During the year of Jubilee, the pardon of God was proclaimed. Debts were forgiven, slaves were freed, mortgages were cancelled, and families would seek to recover their lost members. After the festival, everyone started over with a clean slate. When Jesus arrived, he announced a festival of Jubilee. As a result, the rich and powerful became nervous, but a great sense of excitement spread among everyone else. Especially among the poor, the sick and the outcasts, there was a wonderful sense of expectation. God was going to do something new and they couldn't wait.
We hope this service captures a sense of this excitement and expectation. Please invite your friends and neighbors to join us!
